Taos New Mexico is in an area laden with broad mesas, aerial mountains with a history dating back about 6,000 years. Taos travel along the access route from town to the mountain can be an arduous one depending on the weather conditions and can be a busy route, especially during peak ski season. Some people prefer lodging in town because of its colorful flavor while others feel the drive impedes on optimal skiing time. Many hotel shuttles offer transportation to and from the ski hill.It's just a matter of personal choice.
As for an alternative ski hill in Taos travel to Angelfire which is about 24 miles east of Taos and has 68 trails to explore and almost 2,100 feet of vertical terrain. Taos travel amid the Taos ski area can sometimes be hectic with the many skiers about but the incredible backdrop and great ski hills make it a hit year after year.
If savoring southwestern flavor is on the agenda, then opt to stay in town which is still well within the Taos ski area. When planning your Taos trip there are many lodging options available.
